'Provence' inspires an image of fields filled with lavender, famous wines, deliciously distinctive cuisine, ancient traditions and lively local markets. Peter Mayle famously extolled the virtues of this delightful area in his book 'A year in Provence', where he presented an idyllic, if not quirky, picture of rural French life. Red roofed medieval villages lit by the intense Mediterranean sunshine cluster on the tops of hills, surrounded by a countryside filled with fragrant herbs, wild flowers, vines and cherry trees. The abundance of art, antique and flea markets makes for fruitful shopping, with the displays of charming Provencal fabrics, bedspreads, dried herbs and lavender… Whether it is the medieval Papal palace in Avignon and the famous Pont du Gard, or the dramatic natural scenery of the Vaucluse which encompasses the Luberon hills, Provence encapsulates the influences of France, Spain and Italy, in its food, architecture and outlook making it a region which should not be overlooked.
